· Alcohol consumption in the UK has risen by 121% since 1951 Around 90% of adult population drink and a significant proportion misuse alcohol by regularly drinking over recommended guidelines.

 

· 38.2% of adult men and 22% of adult women drink over daily recommended levels (4 units of alcohol for men and 3 units of alcohol for women) at least once a week.

 

· 40% of all drinking occasions by men and 22% by women involve drinking at least a bottle of wine or over 4 pints of standard beer or lager.

 

· An estimated 1.8 million adults drink at harmful  levels – over 35 units per week for women and over 50 units a week for men.

 

· An estimated 1.1 million adults are dependent upon alcohol.

 

· Alcohol misuse has a huge burden on the National Health Service in 2003 the estimate costs were £1.7 billion per year. In particular:

 

· 35% of all accident and emergency and ambulance costs are alcohol related.

 

· Up to 150,000 hospital admissions per year are linked to excess drinking.

 

· There are estimated 15,000-22,000 alcohol related deaths per year.
